Semi-truck Accident Fatality High in Florida
April was a grim month for auto accidents near Clermont, FL. One such accident involved the death of a vehicle driver involved in an accident with a semi-truck on April 23rd, 2016. The car came in contact with the side of the semi-truck, causing the driver to lose control and overturn. Unfortunately, fatal accidents involving car drivers and semi-trucks are common in Florida, where interstates promote high volumes of truck traffic.
Semi-truck accident fatality data
A 2012 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows Florida in third place for large truck accidents, accounting for five percent of the U.S total. This puts Florida just behind California and Texas for fatal semi-truck accidents. While the majority of accidents in the state and the U.S as a whole do not involve large trucks, these accidents are more likely to be fatal than car accidents.
The same data also shows that out of the fatal accidents involving large trucks in 2012, only 18 percent were semi-truck occupants, while 72 percent were other vehicle occupants. Because of their size and weight, semi-trucks are an increased hazard when involved in accidents with other vehicles.
Causes of semi-truck accidents
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) performed an analysis of the causes of large truck accidents in the U.S. The analysis was completed in 2007, but the trend continues today. They found the following:
- Out of 78,000 large trucks involved in critical accidents, 68,000 or 87 percent were the result of driver performance issues. These include driver inattention, distractions, and fatigue.
- Vehicle and environmental causes only accounted for 10,000 or 13 percent of critical large truck accidents.
This means semi-truck drivers are more likely to cause accidents due to being distracted, driving while tired or sleep deprived and other attention issues. This is dangerous for cars and motorcycles sharing the road with large trucks that may be at risk of causing fatal accidents.
It is important when driving to be aware of all semi-trucks around you, and to watch out for signs of driver inattention. If a semi-truck is frequently drifting over the median or into the shoulder, keep your distance and be careful.
The size and weight of these trucks make even a small collision at high speeds incredibly dangerous and potentially fatal. If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in an auto accident involving a semi-truck, make sure you have knowledgeable and diligent representation from an attorney for your case.
